A lot of old lyrics

5 08 2010

So I was looking through old blogs of mine and here are a bunch of lyrics I wrote between the years 2004-2008.

I’ll admit I was young and naive at the time, and I thought I knew what love was back then, thought I had everything figured out. Well as this year has taught me..Very much not so. None of these are about anyone in particular, but written with the thought of love, of romance.

Romance is the glamour which turns the dust of everyday life into a golden haze.

Starting with my crowning glory. I really love the way this song came out lyrically.

(And I) Knew What Love Was

I loved you

and you lied to me

Memories of what we used to be

Still linger in my head,

As well as the words so softly said.

Skin touching skin,

Bodies entwined

Oh, what a feeling

Your hand in mine

But the tide shifted

and washed that away

Now I dont know what to say

CHORUS:

Except I Love You,

and always will,

Playin love songs outside your window-sil

just trying to get back

to that time

When everything was fine,

And I knew what love was

Yeah, I knew what love was

Under the oak tree

in your parents yard

as night turned to day we fought so hard

to keep this moment frozen in time

when I was yours and you were mine

Then things were said and words exchanged

To hell with excuses, were both to blame

CHORUS:

Except I Love You,

and always will,

Playin love songs outside your window-sil

just trying to get back

to that time

When everything was fine,

And I knew what love was

Yeah, I knew what love was

WHEN WILL IT END

The sun is setting
on another day
It shimmers on the water
across the bay
and I walk
along the pierAll the while saying
(two drum beat)
I wish you were here.

I wish you were by my side
in times of triumph
I wish you were by my side
in times of grief
I wish you were by my side
on the coldest nights
but we all know that you’re the theif
You stole my heart  (whoa)
It tore me apart (yeah) yes it did
and now I’m left..
pickin up pieces
and I don’t know where to begin
when will it end.
The tide may come
and tear us apart again
but no matter what
you’ll be in my heart my friend
and in my heart
you shall remain
though times may change
my heart stays the same
Chorus:
I wish you were by my side
in times of joy
I wish you were by my side
in times of grief
I wish you were by my side
on the coldest nights
but we all know that you’re the theif

You stole my heart  (whoa)
It tore me apart (yeah) yes it did
and now I’m left..
pickin up pieces
and I don’t know where to begin
when will it end.

Grain of Sand

Am I just a grain of sand

upon your beach of memories?

A leaf floating by up in the sky

that’s caught up in the breeze

Or am I something more

something pure

something right

something true

will I ever get a chance

to be more to you

Whatever it takes

Yeah, that’s what I’ll do

Cuz one look from you

it sets me on fire and lights up the sky

yeah it takes me higher and I think I can fly

It leaves me wanting so much more

much more than I’ll ever have

Failsafe/ You

I use these words as a failsafe

to masquerade what I wanna say

and in them I find comfort

that we lasted another day

But is it true?

But is it right?

I pray we last another night

So I can

Show to you

Everything I’ve always wanted to

Light in Your Eyes

It’s just the light in your eyes

That caught me by surprise

All the words I never got to say

It happened all so fast

Just like a car crash

And I live with the pain everyday

When I look into your eyes

I get lost in the light

and am taken back

to  that hot summer night

a night spent

under the stars

a night made for lovers

and that night was ours

Untitled

Crashing like a wave

against the beach

I know what I want

But it’s just out of reach

As I look at the stars

and lay in the sand

I’m taken to a faraway land

“Change of Season”

The leaves change color

from green to red

All the while

remembering what you said

on that one night

many months ago

I try to forget

but it isn’t so

Chorus:

Seasons Change

and colors fade

But the one thing that remains the same

is the fact that I love you

the fact that I love you

People come

and people go

But I just want you to know

My love for you rings true

My love for you rings true

As snow falls gently

‘cross the town

footsteps leave tracks

on the ground

I wonder ’bout you

every now and again

and wonder if

things’ll be like they were back then

Chorus:

Seasons Change

and colors fade

But the one thing that remains the same

is the fact that I love you

the fact that I love you

People come

and people go

But I just want you to know

My love for you rings true

My love for you rings true

Under the Covers

This is an article I wrote in 2006 for a now defunct magazine. Enjoy

UNDER THE COVERS

New bands, and old songs, the relationship between the two can at times be a great thing, or can be comparable to Whitney and Bobby, but a bunch of up and coming bands hope to take a stab at it on the Punk Goes 90s CD which was released on May 9th.
Put out by Fearless Records, the little label that could, and primarily fueled by their myspace page (www.myspace.com/punkgoes90s), which at the time of this writing has had 365,239 plays since mid-March, Punk Goes 90s, the fifth installment in the Punk Goes series looks to tap into the popular music of the 90s.
This CD features eighteen tracks from bands such as The Starting Line, Emery, and the Plain White Ts covering the songs from the generation that brought us 90210, Nirvana, and those damn things called Beanie Babies.the 90s.
As for the topic of cover songs, sure, the original songs are great and all, but after a while of hearing the same song, sung the same way, it gets tiring. But fear not, thats where cover songs come in… Most of the time. Sometimes they can breathe new life into old songs, while paying homage to the original artist, and other times they can just suck.

Scary Kids Scaring Kids keyboardist Pouyan, whose band covered the R.E.M smash hit Losing My Religion, said “None of the members are really fans of R.E.M., but we liked that song, and the lyrics.” Also “covering a song like that was a more challenging choice for the band”, and according to him, they had to step it up, and mix his bands style with the original version. When asked what it meant to him, to be given the chance to cover such a hit song, he said “Its awesome. That song had such a huge impact”. However he feels that some cover songs are good, if done well, but believes that bands should concentrate on original music.

Brian Leppke, the guitarist from metal band Bleeding Through (whose band departed their roots and performed a dead on cover of the song Stars by HUM) said that his band chose that song because a few of the songs they wanted to cover were already chosen, and the band felt HUM was overlooked. When asked why Bleeding Through, a metal band, joined the Punk Goes series, he replied “Just because that type of music, the songs they gave us to pick from were big when we were growing up, and I mean, its awesome, its cool that we have opportunities to do stuff like this.”
When asked how he felt about cover songs, he had a different take than Pouyan, saying “A lot of bands were broken from cover (songs), like Limp Bizkit, its a fun thing”

Some of the highlights on this CD include Gym Class Heroes hip-hop/punk rock version of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers smash hit Under The Bridge, Anberlins lively cover of the Depeche Mode song Enjoy The Silence, and the Killing Moons screamo cover of Alanis Morissettes  jagged little hit You Oughtta Know. However the three best songs on this CD are a simply amazing cover of Wonderwall by Cartel, which is fueled primarily by a non acoustic guitar, as the original was done, the punkish sounding cover of Hey Jealousy by music industry rookies Hit The Lights, and last but not least, internet sensation Bedlight for Blue Eyes emotionally charged acoustic version of Third Eye Blinds song Jumper.

This CD is sure to bring you back to the times  before music became too commercial, so if you liked the music of the 90s, or are a fan of any band featured, you should definitely check out this album.
Also Gym Class Heroes, Emery, and the Plain White Ts are all appearing on this years lineup of the Warped Tour, which is set to hit the Fitchburg Airport, in Fitchburg Massachusetts on Wednesday, August 2nd. Tickets for this event are available on www.tickets.com.
